teaching grammar
Can(not)?! be taught on its own!
Different methods of teaching grammar:
- explicit inductive grammar teaching: pupil derives grammar rule out of language material
- explicit deductive grammar rule: teacher teaches pupil the grammar rule
- implicit grammar teaching: pupil learns by heart some language material with correct grammatical structures, no grammar rules introduced
- incidental grammar teaching = acquisition: learners pick up a grammatical feature while primary focus is on some other aspect of language
teaching grammar
Research --> guided explicit inductive grammar teaching
Different steps in guided explicit inductive grammar teaching:
- observation - you need a lot of examples
- discovering patterns
- a tentative hypothesis
- forming a rule
teaching grammar
Grammar rules should be
- as general as possible (first general, then if necessary exceptions)
- easy to understand
-
should cover 3 dimensions of a grammatical structure
- form, meaning, use
- is concrete and concise (avoid meta language)
- presented in meaningful sentences
- explained by using visual aids like time lines, arrows, use of different colours, stories etc...
"The verb action happened in the past, usually the recent past, and the results of the action are relevant now"
teaching grammar
Grammar exercises
- offer pupils a lot of exercises
- in writing but also in speech!
- some exercise types
teaching grammar
Pupils 1st/2nd grade vocational studies (BSO) advisable to teach them chunks of words
Chunks?
- a group of connected items or words so that they can be stored or processed as single concepts
- kant en klare, ongeanalyseerde brokken van meer dan 1 woord; deze worden niet geproduceerd door de leerlingen op basis van het toepassen van grammatical regels, maar zitten als grote(re) gehelen in ons geheugen
